Whether you\u2019re lacing up your trainers, cheering on friends and family, or watching the coverage, it\u2019s a day that truly unites our region.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Bit of History<\/h3>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first Great North Run was held in\u00a0<strong>1981<\/strong>, thanks to former Olympic long-distance runner\u00a0<strong>Brendan Foster<\/strong>. What began with just over\u00a0<strong>12,000 participants<\/strong>\u00a0has since become the\u00a0<strong>world\u2019s biggest half marathon<\/strong>, attracting more than\u00a0<strong>57,000 runners<\/strong>\u00a0each year.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The famous 13.1-mile route begins in\u00a0<strong>Newcastle city centre<\/strong>, takes runners across the\u00a0<strong>Tyne Bridge<\/strong>, winds through Gateshead, and finishes in spectacular fashion along the\u00a0<strong>South Shields seafront<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Red Arrows Return<\/h3>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most eagerly anticipated traditions of Great North Run day is the\u00a0<strong>Red Arrows flypast<\/strong>. Their breathtaking aerobatic display over the Tyne Bridge is a true highlight for runners and spectators alike.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year, keep your eyes on the skies &#8211; the Red Arrows are expected to pass over\u00a0<strong>Great Park<\/strong>\u00a0at around\u00a0<strong>1.30pm<\/strong>\u00a0as part of their route. It\u2019s always a goosebump moment and a reminder that today is about celebration as much as competition.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why It\u2019s So Special<\/h3>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Great North Run is more than just a race.
